Christian life coaching at Banner Institute in Monroe, Louisiana

Not therapy. Not life coaching. Something more.

Coaching at Banner occupies a distinct space. It is not clinical therapy — our counseling team does that work, and does it well. And it is not the life coaching of the marketplace, with its vision boards and its promises of an optimized you.

"Where secular coaching optimizes the self, Banner coaching reorients the soul."

We respect the tools of modern psychology and we use them. But they sit inside a framework of Christian conviction about what a human being is and what a life is for — not the other way around. The work is professional and structured. It has goals, a cadence, and an endpoint. And it aims at the whole person: your interior life with God, your marriage and your family, your work and your wider influence.

Where are you right now?

Everything Banner does — counseling, coaching, neurofeedback, crisis care — works within one framework.

Where you are right now determines where we start.

Rescue

You're in crisis — a marriage collapsing, an addiction winning, abuse, an acute spiritual emergency. Coaching is not what you need first. Our clinical counseling and crisis care team is, and we'll tell you that plainly in your first conversation.

Stability

You're not in crisis, but you're unmoored — spiritually adrift, unclear on purpose. Maybe you came home from a retreat on fire and watched the fire dim. This is where spiritual formation begins: finding your footing and building real rhythms of life with God.

Strength

You're grounded and growing, ready to go deeper, to lead well in your home, church, and work, and to help others walk the same road. This stage is about maturity and multiplication. That growth can also reach into your vocation through leadership coaching.

Spiritual Formation Coaching

This is the heart of what we do. Whether you're finding your footing or going deeper, formation coaching walks with you toward a rooted, durable life with God — with structure, honesty, and real accountability. And because a person formed in Christ brings that wholeness home, the work doesn't stop with you: it reaches into your marriage, your family, and the way you lead.

Our flagship cohort

THE PATH

A six-week, team-taught group for men ready to turn a retreat's momentum into lasting change — honest conversation, real brotherhood, and a clear path forward.

Learn about The Path

Formation Coaching

A structured, goal-oriented arc with real accountability — identity, honest inventory, sacred rhythms of prayer and practice, gifts, testimony, and forward movement. For the person with momentum who needs a path. Available for both men and women.

Goals and accountability · Structured arc · Men and women

Spiritual Direction

Open-ended, contemplative accompaniment in your life with God. Typically monthly, walking through seasons of discernment, dryness, or deepening. For the mature Christian who wants presence, not an agenda.

Monthly · Open-ended · Contemplative

Formation coaching is for building, establishing the rhythms, character, and direction of a maturing faith.

Spiritual direction is for deepening, discerning where God is moving in a walk already underway.

Not sure which fits? Our Care Coordinator will help you find the right starting point.

Already grounded, and finding that others lean on you? The Foundations Cohort is spiritual formation training for pastors, counselors, and the people God keeps sending people to — for those who do the work.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between coaching and counseling at Banner?

Counseling is clinical work: licensed therapists treating depression, anxiety, trauma, marital crisis, and addiction. Coaching is forward-looking, goal-oriented work for people who are not in clinical crisis — formation, purpose, leadership. They are connected: our counselors refer clients to coaching when they're ready, and our coaches refer to the clinical team when deeper care is needed. A conversation with our Care Coordinator sorts this honestly.

What is spiritual formation coaching?

It's structured, goal-oriented coaching for your life with God — moving from a moment of transformation, or a vague sense that there's more, into rooted, daily Christian living. A typical engagement works through identity, honest inventory, daily rhythms of prayer and practice, gifts, and forward movement, with real accountability. It differs from spiritual direction, which is open-ended, contemplative accompaniment rather than a goal-driven arc.

Is coaching at Banner only for men?

No. The Path, our group cohort, is currently a men's program. But one-on-one formation coaching for women is available, and spiritual direction and executive coaching serve men and women equally.

Do you offer marriage or family coaching?

Our coaching forms the individual — and a person formed in Christ brings that wholeness home. We'll help you grow toward a fuller, more Christ-centered marriage and family life. This is formation, not clinical marriage counseling; if what you need is counseling for your marriage, our licensed counseling team is the right place to begin, and we'll point you there.

Do I have to be a Christian to work with a Banner coach?

Most who come for spiritual formation are already walking with Christ, but we don't require it — and our leadership coaching in particular serves people of any background. We're forthright about our foundation: every coach works from Christian conviction. We've found that honesty serves clients of every persuasion better than vagueness does.

How much does coaching cost?

Rates vary by engagement — a formation arc, a group cohort, and a multi-month executive relationship are priced differently. We discuss cost openly when you speak with our Care Coordinator rather than posting a single number that won't fit most situations.
